Sustainability & Community Impact
Our Commitment to Sustainability and Community Empowerment
For Birds of Paradise Indonesia Expeditions, sustainability is not a marketing term; it is the core principle upon which our entire business is built. The magnificent species we showcase and the pristine habitats they depend on are fragile. Our parent, Juara Holding Group, has mandated that our operations must create a net-positive impact, ensuring that every expedition contributes directly to the long-term preservation of Papua’s biodiversity and the well-being of its indigenous communities. Our approach is holistic, encompassing environmental conservation, social responsibility, and economic empowerment.
Environmental Commitments
We are dedicated to minimizing our footprint and actively contributing to the health of the ecosystems where we operate.
- Carbon Offsetting Program: We calculate the total carbon emissions for every expedition, including all international and domestic flights, boat travel, and ground operations. We then offset 100% of these emissions by purchasing certified carbon credits from the Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve Project in Kalimantan, which protects high-conservation-value peat swamp forests.
- Strict No Single-Use Plastic Policy: All guests are provided with high-quality reusable water bottles upon arrival. Our partner lodges and vessels are equipped with advanced water filtration systems, completely eliminating the need for disposable plastic bottles, which are a major source of pollution in the archipelago.
- Comprehensive Waste Management: In remote areas with no municipal services, we operate a strict “pack-in, pack-out” policy for all non-biodegradable waste. We partner with local initiatives like the Sorong Waste Bank to ensure all waste from our operations is properly recycled or disposed of.
- Direct Funding for Marine Conservation: For every guest on a Raja Ampat expedition, a significant portion of the fee is paid directly to the Raja Ampat Marine Park authority to fund ranger patrols and conservation programs. We are also proud supporters of the Misool Foundation and their work in combating shark finning and protecting critical marine habitats.
Community Empowerment & Social Responsibility
We believe that conservation is only successful when local communities are its primary beneficiaries.
- Local Employment & Fair Wages: We are committed to maximizing local employment. Over 70% of our field staff, including guides, porters, and boat crew, are hired from local Papuan communities. All full-time Indonesian employees receive salaries that exceed the provincial minimum wage (UMR) and are enrolled in national social security (BPJS Ketenagakerjaan) and healthcare (BPJS Kesehatan) programs.
- Community Development Fund: We allocate 2% of our annual net profit to a dedicated Community Development Fund. This fund is co-managed with a council of village elders from our key operational areas, such as the Arfak highlands, to support local priorities in education, healthcare, and sustainable infrastructure.
- Supporting Local Enterprise & Culture: We empower local economies by sourcing provisions from local markets and commissioning traditional artisans for guest amenities, such as authentic woven noken bags. We facilitate ethical and direct souvenir purchasing, ensuring 100% of the proceeds go to the craftsperson.
- Respect for Adat (Customary Law): We engage in extensive consultation with local community leaders to ensure our operations respect traditional customs, land rights, and sacred sites.

Safeguarding Indonesia’s Irreplaceable Biodiversity
Imagine the vibrant flash of a Wilson’s Bird-of-Paradise, a jewel-toned marvel darting through the ancient rainforests of Waigeo, its existence a testament to the extraordinary biodiversity of the Indonesian archipelago. Birds of Paradise Indonesia Expeditions understands that the allure of these remote lands comes with a profound responsibility to protect them. Our environmental initiatives extend far beyond simply minimizing impact; we actively engage in the preservation of both terrestrial and marine ecosystems, focusing on the unique and often endemic species that call these islands home. In the lush interior, our teams collaborate with local ranger networks to conduct anti-poaching patrols and habitat monitoring, particularly in critical areas like the Arfak Mountains, safeguarding the habitats of species from tree kangaroos to the magnificent Western Parotia. We assist in monitoring over 40 endemic bird species across key territories, including the Aru Islands, home to the Greater Bird-of-Paradise, ensuring their populations remain healthy and resilient.
Venturing into Indonesia’s azure waters, our commitment to conservation continues beneath the surface. The coral reefs of Raja Ampat, often called the “Amazon of the Seas,” are among the most biodiverse marine environments on Earth, and their health is paramount. Birds of Paradise Indonesia Expeditions supports coral reef restoration projects, working with marine biologists to rehabilitate damaged areas and foster new growth. We implement strict guidelines for our vessels and guests, ensuring minimal disturbance to delicate underwater ecosystems, from anchoring protocols to responsible snorkeling and diving practices. Our expeditions also contribute to marine debris removal initiatives, recognizing that pristine waters are essential for the myriad of fish, sharks, and marine mammals that thrive here. Through scientific partnerships, data collected during our expeditions, such as marine life observations and water quality reports, directly informs broader conservation strategies, transforming every journey into a vital contribution to ecological understanding and protection. Empowering Local Communities and Preserving Cultural Tapestry
The spirit of Indonesia’s wilderness is inextricably linked to its people. Birds of Paradise Indonesia Expeditions recognizes that true sustainability must uplift the communities who have been custodians of these lands for generations. Our approach to social responsibility is deeply rooted in direct empowerment and respect for indigenous cultures. We prioritize local employment, ensuring that over 85% of our field staff, from skilled expedition leaders and boat captains to cooks and porters, are hired directly from the communities we visit. These roles come with fair wages, comprehensive training programs, and opportunities for professional development, fostering long-term career paths and building local capacity. This commitment creates a tangible economic benefit that ripples through villages, supporting families and strengthening local economies, transforming tourism into a catalyst for positive, self-determined growth.
Beyond direct employment, our expeditions are designed to support local entrepreneurship and preserve the rich cultural tapestry of Indonesia. We actively source fresh produce, traditional handicrafts, and other services from local markets and artisans, ensuring that more of the tourism dollar remains within the community. Initiatives include supporting micro-enterprises, such as small-scale craft cooperatives or homestay providers, giving local residents new avenues for income generation. Crucially, we facilitate respectful cultural exchange, encouraging guests to engage authentically with indigenous customs, art forms, and storytelling. Our guides, often members of these communities themselves, act as invaluable cultural bridges, sharing insights into traditional ways of life, from the intricate patterns of Papuan weaving to the unique spiritual practices of island communities. This intentional engagement helps to celebrate and sustain the vibrant heritage that defines these extraordinary places.
Our dedication also extends to targeted community development projects. Since 2018, Birds of Paradise Indonesia Expeditions has invested over $1.5 million directly into community-led initiatives, ranging from clean water projects to educational scholarships for local children in remote villages. These projects are identified and prioritized by the communities themselves, ensuring they address genuine needs and foster long-term self-sufficiency. By channeling a portion of expedition fees directly into these programs, every guest becomes an integral part of a positive feedback loop, where their journey contributes tangibly to improved health, education, and opportunities for the people they encounter. This collaborative model ensures that the benefits of luxury tourism are shared equitably, leaving a legacy of empowerment and progress.
Advancing Sustainable Practices and Guest Engagement
Operational excellence at Birds of Paradise Indonesia Expeditions is synonymous with leading-edge sustainability practices. While carbon offsetting addresses emissions, our daily operations focus on minimizing our physical footprint in these fragile environments. We adhere to a strict “zero single-use plastic” policy, having eliminated over 10,000 plastic bottles from our operations annually since its implementation in 2019, utilizing refillable water bottles and reusable containers instead. Waste management in remote locations is a significant challenge, which we tackle through meticulous sorting, composting organic waste where possible, and transporting non-biodegradable refuse to appropriate recycling or disposal facilities on the mainland. Our remote camps and vessels are increasingly powered by renewable energy sources, such as solar panels, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and minimizing noise pollution, ensuring a serene experience for both guests and wildlife.
A cornerstone of our philosophy is the belief that informed guests are powerful advocates for conservation. Each expedition serves
